What comes to mind when you think of a Sneak production? Big bounce, super funky, a little rough around the edges and plenty of Latin flair?!? Well The Latin Kardes EP is just that, with a little extra courtesy of Turkish wonder-kid DJ Soydan.
Now I have a bit of a love / hate relationship with Sneak. I always have one of his productions in my bag; and no matter when or what I need that big track for, it never fails to get the room really jumping. For that, I have to thank the big man! But ask me to come along to see him play, and I’ll politely pass. Nothing against his skills - he’s definitely got those. I just can’t handle 4 hours of it. It’s like many a crude uphamism I can think of (but won’t write up here!) - you can get too much of a good thing… and when you do it just aint that good anymore!
With that in mind, I remember we’re looking at a Sneak production here… and a co-production at that, with one of the new kids on the block who I think actually adds a considerable amount of maturity to the pre-requisite formula too. The more I hear each of the tracks on Latin Kardes, the more subtle additions, layers, filters and other slight tweaks that just aren’t the usual Sneak sound. It’s really making me appreciate the young DJ Soydan, while reconsidering my views on a full set of the sound!
Artist: DJ Sneak & DJ Soydan
Release Title: The Latin Kardes EP
Label: Yakuza Recordings
1. Fiesta Loca
2. Baba
3. Corazon
4. Ata
Official release date: February 22, 2010
Kicking off in full-on, funky, vocal style; Fiesta Loca takes the reigns and runs like a real Sneak horse! Powerful kick, layered vocal stabs and an infectious muted horn melody. It’ll get ‘em going, this one will!
Baba is the second track, which maintains the powerful kick and purpose from Fiesta Loca, but it’s more about the keys here. Simple, but deadly effective melody with everything else built around. There are ebbs and flows throughout, that make you feel a bit knackered by the end!
Back to full-on Latin flavour with track 3; Corazon. An old-school, beautifully energetic, horn led masterpiece! The trumpets are just outrageously good! And then the breakdown… oh that breakdown. I want to be sipping coffee outside a cafe somewhere in South America… brilliant!
Wrapping up this fine EP is Ata; a powerful, kick heavy, techy track with distorted vocals and simple melody, all accompanied by a crazy collection of punches, stabs, and tweaks that send your ears a little crazy!
This is a great first release of 2010 for Irish label Yakuza Recordings, and in my opinion a development for Sneak’s sound. DJ Soydan adds some enlightening elements to Sneak’s tried and tested formula, and the results are superb. I see these tracks being big all year!
CheckPoint
Really like Baba track 2. I think you are right about sipping java in South America. This is a great mid day weekend treat!
