Great music is all about creating something unique, and ever since the introduction of computers and electronic devices to the world of production late in the last century, musicians have been pushing the boundaries by creating new and wonderfully experimental sounds; some going on to be iconic genres, some fading into insignificance.
Wherther you’re a fan of genre de-compartmentalisation or not, you cannot deny the incredible variation of music that’s available today. A quick internet search estimates anywhere from 5,000 to 20,000 different styles are out there, but who really knows? Anyone involved in dance music over the 90s and 00s will recall the introduction of a new style or two in your local record store every week… Hyper-funky, deep, psy-minimal anyone?!?!
Sync/Lost is a brilliant, visual project that aims to bring all of the genres, styles and sounds of electronic music together in one interactive experiment. You can check out the video below which shows 3 users visually selecting content (via Wii remotes!) which is then interlaced and delivered sonically over headphones or external speakers. In the words of Sync/Lost themselves:
“SyncLost is a multi-user installation for immersion in the history of electronic music. From a complex timeline, rhythms and sub-rhythms merge to create new sounds.”

It’s pretty incredible, however it works! It’s also a great representation of where today’s music comes from.
