Broadway & Wilson - Good Old Daze LP (Farris Wheel)

Broadway & Wilson are better known as Jeff Bloom and Andrew Emil. These Chicago-based DJs seem to be two of the busiest producers in town, working under endless monikers and partnerships.

Farris Wheel Recordings was started by Gene Farris in 1998 and launched with The Copa Cabana EP. Farris takes pride in discovering new talent from Chicago and around the world, such as heavenly vocalist Lady Sarah, and also releasing the first record from Greenskeepers.

This strong and diverse LP kicks off with Don’t Fight Love, a funky house number that obviously demonstrates the duo’s strong Chicago sound. Filtering bass loops and plucky disco guitars are used with smooth horns and percussion that (gladly) doesn’t try to overpower the real funk that’s going on in the instrumentation. POINTF!VE is another of Jeff Bloom’s alter egos, and here he develops the Sunny track into a low-slung broken-beat affair, using the full Boney M. vocal along with shuffling drums and ever some clever vocal beat-box samples. This quirky number is definitely a gem to hold on to for a while. Nachtmusic is a nice mid-tempo groove that sparkles along with lush chords and twinkling piano, creating a mental image of a peaceful midnight drive, roof down, after a long summer’s day. One of those real beautiful pieces of music that will evoke memories in every music lover. The Bump Mix of Sunny does just that - bumping, bouncing percussion and crunchy guitar licks create a stabby, jostling feel, while the plucked bass adds a solid underlying groove. The vocal hook loops in and out, along with some perfectly tuned and timed stabs, keys and other sample sounds. La Roi Cosmique de la Mode (”The Cosmic King of the World” for you Anglo-Saxons) is a full on Chicago House number, launching into zaps and squeaks galore. Deep stabbing chords helps it retain a funk and organic feel, but with enough techy elements to fulfill the needs of late night house-heads. Finally, the Deep Mix of Sunny concentrates on a solid sub-bass and smooth swirling effects along with the same vocal snippet. I really like the stripped back feel, and this deep but strong mix works as a great dub to complete the LP.
