Nick Turner is potentially a rising star of pitched down grooves, with his debut release set to mimic the recent success of artists like Tensnake and The Revenge.
The fantastically named Trendy Mullet Recordings is a genre-bending label that “sticks two fingers up” to followers of passing fads. Their aim is to put out music to make people dance, and releases span the genres of electronic music accordingly.

Love is Reel is another welcome addition to the slo-mo house movement at a rather chugging 110 beats per minute or so. Funky synth and vocal samples fade in and out, with echoing percussion bouncing around and sparkly melody layered on top. Big disco influences shine through here, and a short but very effective break gives way to a slamming peak, which in turn opens up with more of the vocal snippets. Out Of Your Love is slower still, and builds tension even more dramatically. A thumping, rolling bass and kick drum keeps things moving as the rhythm guitar and airy synth are filtered and teased into the mix. A new, bright lead melody flickers into the break, and the samples extend to reveal an uplifting chord change, while cymbals and sweeps are added for the main drop. The complete riff is quite euphoric in nature, and deceptively simple, while at the same time a killer bassline keeps things funky and dancefloor friendly. A real gem for the afterhours.
