It was a big, busy & fun week with house guests from Amsterdam & the U.K. staying with me. With Linda here from Holland we reminisced about old times and about how we both loved Solomon Burke whom she has seen a few times in Amsterdam, we had paid tribute to his passing on the last show. Tony came in from the U.K. via Phoenix the same day that Linda left and we went straight from the airport to see his client the Gorillaz at the Universal Amphitheater here in L.A. It was a great show and I got to chat with the band afterwards, in particular Paul Simonon & Mick Jones. Talkin’ about reminiscing I had done many shows with The Clash in the day in particular “Rock Against Racism” shows in Brixton, so we had plenty to talk about. This was a memorable night!

We started the show with “Alabama Blues” from St Germain which came out on Blue Note in 1997 and with US3 before hand really helped the old skool jazz label cross over to a larger audience. Following this Norah Jones came out with her album which really blew the doors open. I remember sitting in label head Bruce Lundvall’s office in New York office listening to the first demos of her debut album around the same time, I loved what I heard but I never thought it would go multi platinum!

On the house tip new tracks were featured: “Zoomer” by Sergio Fernandez, “A Sin” by Anthea & Celler , “Freak E” by Lil House Gangstaz, & many more. Other new releases included a wonderful remix of “Always” by Junip, Jose Gonzalez’s new release by the original band that he was a member of 5 years ago. Check out also my current favorite tune by Elefant front man Diego Garcia, “You Were Never There”. Beautiful production with lush strings makes this feel like a 2010 updated version of a Jobim classic! Also The incredible Noisettes cover of the Fine Young Cannibals “Ever Fallen In Love” , M.I.A. returns with “It Takes Muscle” from her new release “MAYA”.

I also threw in a few dub and soul classics as usual to round things off like, The Heptones “Book of Rules” & The Impact All Star’s wonderful “Ordinary Version Chapter 3” , Eddie Kendricks “Date With Rain” & new soul from Angie Stone, “I Wasn’t Kidding”.

Nearly forgot to mention Giant Steps great new release from The Beast & Nnenna Freelon, “Rise Beyond the Sky” is a must.
