So it’s Christmas Eve and I am feeling pretty festive. I was going to pack the show with all sorts of crazy and interesting Christmas & holiday tunes but decided that I would just start the show with one and that would be it. Making just a seasonal gesture or statement if you like. Then surprise, surprise I get sent via email the morning of the show an un released mp3 of “Merry Christmas” performed and sung from legend songwriter and producer Leon Ware for me to include in the show. How about that for a pre Christmas bonus! For those of you who are not aware of who Leon Ware is, he wrote such mega songs as, “I Want You” for Marvin Gaye, “I Wanna Be Where You Are” for Michael Jackson & songs for Diana Ross, Minnie Ripperton and on & on.
So we have ended up pretty much packing the show with highlights from 2010 and book ending with two Christmas songs. The first one is “Bright Star In The East” by Billy Taylor, the piano player not the other famous Taylor that plays the bass. This was taken from a Christmas album by Billy which was narrated by friend and fan David Frost. Great intro and cool groove on this one.
We played new work from Gil Scott-Heron, “New York Is Killing Me” featuring Mos Def as well as “Love & Death” by Ebo Taylor, both feeling very current as we head into the next year. I got a chance to play “Sun” by Caribou once again because it really is one of my stand out tunes and artists of 2010. Other highlights were , “The Cusp” by Robert Mitchell’s Panacea. This I took from Robert’s third album and I feel his best. Fantastic production, original arrangements and a beautiful vocal delivery by Deborah Jordan make this a special project.
Christian Prommer teams up once again with Alex Barck to give us the wonderful & haunting track “Gladys Knight”. While keeping in a Germanic vibe Brant Brauer Frick’s “Bop” taken from the EP of the same name again delivers some of the most original and compelling sounds of the year!
I am looking forward to the New Year, with releases from artists like Ernest Saint Laurent, we played the advanced promo of “The Moon Is Gone” from the forthcoming release, it looks like its going to be musically a promising 2011!
Till next time….& Happy New Year to you!!
