Streetnoise! 6/24/11

We started the show where East coast amicably meets west in this spirited rework of Homeboy Sandman’s distinct indie-hip hop hybrid. The Queens, New York MC has long been revered for his rhymes, and on thus release Jason Drake takes the straight shooting track to task with a hint of instrumentals. The producer and LA resident performs solo under Cassettes Won’t Listen here dropping in piano and percussion to create a dancy cushioning around “The Carpenter’s” Dostoevsky-dropping verbage. Grab Cassettes Won’t Listen’s upcoming LP “Evinspacey”June 21.

Hailing from Sydney, Australia: DJ, producer and beat maker Omegaman has laid down an infectious groove with his new ass wigglin’ track “Skankin’ Riddim”. It’s a cheeky salute to old skool Ska with a straight up breakbeat, dubby bassline, majestic horns courtesy of Scotty Sax, and vocal samples from reggae legend Horseman. The all-star lineup of remix artists includes Thomas Blondet, Stickybuds, BustaAll Good Funk Alliance, and Fretless. Styles range from straight up ska with big beats, lounge core head-nodders, to breakbeat stompers with some seriously womping bass action. We played the original mix as well as All Good Funk Alliance’s skanky dub version, superb!

I rediscovered the incredible King Khan & The Shrines recently. King Khan the master of ceremonies of his ex-centric shows and has been called a  lunatic version of Sun Ra and George Clinton which is saying a lot! The band was founded in 1999 by then 22-year-old King Khan formerly of Canadian garage rock outfits The Spaceshits (where he operated under the pseudonym Blacksnake) and Kukamongas. The band is noted for its impressive stage antics. Typically King Khan is scantily clad, and the overwhelming frontman. Having mentioned all the antics it cannot take away from the fact that the music is amazing, a mix of psychedelia, rock funk and everything else in-between. We played “Que Lindo Sueno”.

Domino Records always releases a fine collection of artists such as Arctic Monkeys, Franz Ferdinand,Animal Collective & Clinic, launches their latest offering. About Group. About Group consist of Charles Hayward (This Heat, Camberwell Now, Monkey Puzzle Trio, Clear Frame), John Coxon (Spring Heel Jack, Spiritualized), Pat Thomas (has played with Derek Bailey, Tony Oxley, Jimmy Carl Black and Eugene Chadbourne amongst countless others) & Alexis Taylor (Hot Chip). Each member rotates on instruments, Wurlitzer, drums, organ, gtr & electronic textures. We played “Your’e No Good” the bands excellent remake of the Terry Riley’s classic.

The Beast pays tribute to the late great Guru on this track, “Keep Your Worries” featuring John Robinson & Jocelyn Ellis. I really recommend picking up this EP, not a fan of tribute records but this one is dope! “Guru Legacy” is a six-track EP dedicated to the late Gang Starr rapper Keith “Guru” Elam. The project — brought to you by the Revivalist — was recorded by The Beast, a jazz ensemble featuring Eric Hirsh on piano, Stephen Coffman on the drums, Peter Kimosh on bass guitar and Pierce Freelon on vocals. The band offers their interpretation of songs from Guru’s Jazzmatazz catalogue. The EP also features a few remixes and a 13-minute interview with the Roots‘ leader and drummer ?uestlove talking about Guru’s influence on hip-hop.

Lastly, among the new releases from the great UK funk label comes Randa & The Soul Kingdom’s “The Things”. Born in Jordan, raised in the working class suburbs of Perth, Australia, singer Randa Khamis caught the black music bug early. At the age of 12 she was talking her way into local clubs, desperate to dance to the sounds of James Brown, Parliament, Kurtis Blow, Ann Sexton and Aretha Franklin. Totally entranced by the music she heard, Randa decided then in her early teens that she could, would, and must become a soul singer. Randa and the Soul Kingdom released on Freestyle Records to great acclaim, and sell out shows in the UK and Europe soon followed. Now in 2011 Randa returns with her second album, produced by Aussie music legend Lance Ferguson (The Bamboos, Cookin On 3 Burners, Lanu), “The Things” taken from the forthcoming album of the same name, allows Randa works out her disco diva muscles to quite stunning effect! Squelchy synths rides over an insistent disco beat, whilst Lance Ferguson’s scratchy guitar evokes the heady, hedonistic era of Chic, Studio 54 and Bianca Jagger riding a white horse across the dance floor!
